ROADWAY IMPROVEMENTS COMPLETED ON ROUTE 602 (CEMETERY ROAD/LEE STREET) IMPROVEMENTS PROJECT IN ACCOMACK AND NORTHAMPTON COUNTIES
ACCOMACK/NORTHAMPTON COUNTIES — Contractor crews substantially completed roadway rehabilitation work this month on the Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) Route 602 (Cemetery Road/Lee Street) Improvements Project, spanning between Accomack and Northampton counties.
This improvements project was designed to extend the life of the roadway and improve driving conditions on Route 602.
The Northampton County portion of the project extended approximately 1.2 miles on Route 602 (Cemetery Road), from the intersection with Route 183 (Occohannock Neck Road) to the Accomack County line. Improvements in this section of Route 602 included the rehabilitation of the existing pavement and flattening the cross slope.

The Accomack County portion of the project extended approximately 0.55 miles on Route 602 (Lee Street), from the Northampton County line to east of the intersection with Route 178 (Belle Haven Road). Improvements included the rehabilitation of the existing pavement while addressing width, curvature and drainage deficiencies, and adding paved 4-foot-wide shoulders to accommodate bicycle riders.
VDOT awarded the $5.5 million construction contract to Branscome, Inc., who began construction in November 2023. The project in total is estimated to be complete as early as spring 2025, to complete the remaining activities such as seeding throughout project limits.
